Law enforcement officials in Arcadia, California, have removed 21 children from a large private residence as part of a disturbing investigation involving allegations of child abuse and a suspected misuse of surrogacy practices. The probe began when a 2-month-old baby was brought to the hospital with significant head trauma, prompting police to obtain a warrant to search the home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the search, investigators reviewed home surveillance footage that allegedly captured a nanny, violently shaking and slapping the injured infant. Officials claim the video also revealed similar abusive behavior toward other children in the house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The children, who range in age from 2 months to 13 years old\u2014most under the age of 3\u2014were all reportedly born through surrogacy and are legally connected to the couple living in the home: Guojun Xuan and Silvia Zhang. Police believe the children were biologically related to the couple, with surrogate mothers based in states including Florida and Texas carrying the pregnancies. Authorities say the women were likely unaware of the full extent of the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Of the 21 children, 15 were found living at the Arcadia residence, while six had already been relocated to other homes. All have since been placed in protective custody. The home itself is a sprawling nine-bedroom estate, that neighbors described as operating more like a commercial facility than a family home. One neighbor noted it resembled a hotel, complete with a central reception area and suite-style rooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Both Xuan and Zhang are facing multiple felony counts related to child endangerment and neglect. Meanwhile, authorities have issued a warrant for Li, who has not yet been located.
