A 29-year-old man from San Clemente has been hit with a staggering 37 counts of attempted murder after allegedly driving his vehicle into a crowd of pedestrians in East Hollywood, Los Angeles, last Friday night. The charges include 37 counts of attempted murder and 37 counts of assault with a deadly weapon, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The incident took place shortly after 2 a.m. on July 19, outside the Vermont Hollywood nightclub on Santa Monica Boulevard. A large group had gathered following a concert when the suspect, identified as Fernando Ramirez, allegedly drove a Nissan Versa onto the sidewalk and into the crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Authorities say the crash injured 37 people, with 23 taken to the hospital and at least eight suffering serious injuries. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported, which LAPD officials have described as \u201cremarkable\u201d given the scale of the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman stated that Ramirez appeared to intentionally aim his car at a densely packed group of pedestrians. \u201cThis was an act that could have resulted in mass tragedy,\u201d Hochman said during a press briefing. He added that Ramirez could face multiple life sentences if convicted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bystanders quickly swarmed the vehicle and pulled Ramirez from the driver\u2019s seat. In the chaos that followed, he was physically assaulted by some members of the crowd. During the altercation, Ramirez was shot in the lower back by an unknown individual who fled the scene. Police are still working to identify the shooter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ramirez was taken into custody the following day and is currently being held without bail. He is expected to be arraigned at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center in Los Angeles on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Officials also revealed that Ramirez has a prior criminal history, including a hate crime conviction from 2019 involving an attack on a Black man at a grocery store. He also faces separate charges in Orange County related to domestic violence and driving under the influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Investigators are continuing to review surveillance footage and gather witness statements to piece together the full circumstances of the crash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
