Retail demand in the U.S. has jumped about 86% over the past few years, and producers in Japan and China are struggling to keep up. Japan, in particular, has seen its matcha harvest decline due to poor weather and labor shortages, while tariffs on imports into the U.S.—37.5% on goods from China and 15% on those from Japan—are further driving up costs.

Production Constraints and Shifting Supply

Matcha production is labor-intensive. The tea leaves (known as tencha) must be grown in shaded conditions, harvested carefully, steamed, stripped of stems and veins, then ground into powder. Because harvesting later in the season delivers lower-quality matcha and because many farms are aging with fewer workers, supply is tightening. Meanwhile, even as China’s matcha output ramps up, the demand for the Japanese premium varieties remains strong, putting extra strain on the entire global supply chain.

What This Means for Consumers & Cafés

Everybody from individual consumers to café owners is seeing the impact. High-grade Japanese matcha has become substantially more expensive—some varieties are up by 75%—and even lower tiers are costing 30-50% more than before. Many cafés are considering price hikes, sourcing from alternate countries, or promoting other teas. In places like the Bay Area, some shops have already removed matcha items from their menus or are scaling back offerings until the situation stabilizes.

The Outlook: High Demand, Tight Supply

The trend doesn’t seem to be cooling off. Social media platforms continue to fuel interest—matcha has become popular not just as a drink but as a cultural aesthetic, a “wellness” symbol, and a lifestyle photo prop. Younger consumers in particular are still drawn to it. However, given the limited potential to boost high-quality production quickly (new tencha crops take years to mature), experts expect that matcha will remain expensive in the near term. Continued climate pressures, aging farming communities, and supply chain costs all compound the challenge ahead.

Matcha lovers everywhere are feeling the pinch as the powdered green tea’s price surges sharply around the world.
