A federal jury in Florida has found Ryan Wesley Routh, 59, guilty of attempting to assassinate Donald Trump in a 2024 plot near Trump\u2019s golf course. Prosecutors said Routh carefully planned the attack for weeks, using burner phones, surveillance, and reconnaissance. On Sept. 15, 2024, he was spotted with a rifle near shrubbery by the West Palm Beach course while Trump played golf. A Secret Service agent fired at him, and Routh fled before being arrested later the same day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He faced five federal charges, including attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate, assaulting a federal officer, and multiple weapons violations. Representing himself in court, Routh denied intending to kill, insisting he never fired a weapon. The jury, however, took less than three hours to return guilty on all counts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When the verdict was announced, Routh tried to stab himself in the neck with a pen inside the courtroom. Marshals intervened quickly as his daughter shouted, \u201cDad, don\u2019t hurt yourself,\u201d before officers restrained him and escorted him out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Routh now faces a possible life sentence when he is formally sentenced on December 18. Attorney General Pam Bondi and Trump both praised the verdict, saying it condemned political violence and upheld justice.
