FSU Quarterback Tommy Castellanos Appeals to NCAA for Extra Year of Eligibility

Tommy Castellanos — currently quarterback at Florida State Seminoles — is appealing to NCAA for an extra year of college eligibility after the governing body denied his waiver request for a fifth season. His argument hinges on the fact that in 2022, during his time at another school, he played in only five games; under more recent NCAA rules, that level of participation may still qualify as a “redshirt” season.

Supporters of his appeal, including his attorney, contend that he’s being treated unfairly, since current players in similar circumstances are allowed to maintain redshirt status even after appearing in a conference championship game. Meanwhile, Castellanos remains the starting QB for Florida State, having thrown for 2,760 yards this season with 15 touchdowns, and also led the team in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns.

If granted the extra year, Castellanos could return in 2026 — potentially giving him another shot at leading the Seminoles under new coaching and offensive schemes. For now, the decision from the NCAA is pending and will likely affect both he and the team’s long-term plans.
