Transportation Secretary Proposes National Aviation Overhaul

In early May, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy introduced a proposal aimed at overhauling the nation’s air traffic control system and expanding support for public transit infrastructure. The plan calls for new investments in radar and communications technology, as well as increased funding for electric buses, light rail projects, and air traffic control staffing.

The Department of Transportation has framed the initiative as a long-term modernization effort to improve efficiency and safety across the transportation network. Supporters in both political parties have expressed interest, noting bipartisan concerns over delays, outdated infrastructure, and workforce shortages.

While funding mechanisms and cost projections are still under discussion, Duffy has requested preliminary budget support from Congress. Lawmakers are expected to review the proposal as part of broader infrastructure negotiations later this summer.
