House Speaker Mike Johnson is pushing for new work requirements for Medicaid recipients under a legislative package known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.” He says the proposal aims to reduce fraud and ensure that able-bodied adults contribute to society.
Critics, however, argue the move could strip healthcare from millions of low-income Americans. According to estimates from the Congressional Budget Office, around 5.2 million people could lose Medicaid coverage if the bill becomes law.
Johnson defends the plan, saying it’s about strengthening Medicaid by eliminating waste and abuse. He emphasized that those who are able to work should do so in order to receive government benefits.
Opponents warn the proposal could disproportionately harm vulnerable communities, especially those who face barriers to employment such as lack of transportation or childcare.
As the legislation heads to the Senate, the debate is intensifying. Supporters argue it promotes personal responsibility and fiscal discipline, while critics say it threatens healthcare access for millions of Americans.
