Former Nike CEO John Donahoe Named Stanford Athletic Director

Stanford University has appointed John Donahoe, the former CEO of Nike, as its next athletic director. Donahoe, a Stanford graduate with a long track record in business leadership, will officially step into the role on September 8, succeeding Bernard Muir, who announced his departure earlier this year after more than a decade in the position.

Donahoe brings significant executive experience to the role, having previously led companies like eBay, ServiceNow, and Bain & Company, in addition to his most recent tenure at Nike. University officials highlighted his unique blend of strategic vision, business acumen, and personal connection to Stanford as key reasons for the hire. He has been actively involved with the university through various advisory roles and philanthropic efforts.

The move comes as Stanford athletics navigates a new chapter, including a transition to the Atlantic Coast Conference and growing financial pressures in college sports. While Stanford remains a powerhouse across numerous sports—with over 130 NCAA team championships—recent struggles in marquee programs like football and men’s basketball have prompted internal changes. Donahoe is expected to focus on enhancing both competitiveness and long-term sustainability within the evolving landscape of collegiate athletics.
