Massive Wildfire Threatens Homes in Central California

A fast-moving wildfire in central California has burned over 66,000 acres, injured three people, and forced evacuations as it tears through Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties. The blaze, known as the Gifford Fire, started late last week and remains just 5% contained as of Monday evening.

Flames have prompted mandatory evacuations near State Route 166, which is closed in both directions east of Santa Maria. About 450 homes and structures are at risk. One person suffered severe burns while fleeing on foot, and two contract workers were hurt in an ATV accident while helping with fire operations.

More than 1,000 firefighters are working to contain the blaze, facing challenges from extreme heat, rugged terrain, and heavy smoke that has spread into neighboring counties. Fire officials believe the blaze may have started from multiple ignition points along the highway.

With hot, dry, and windy weather expected to continue through the week, authorities warn that fire conditions may worsen. Residents are urged to stay alert and follow evacuation guidance as crews battle the growing threat.
