An Army base in southeast Georgia was rocked by gunfire Tuesday morning when a soldier allegedly opened fire on his unit, wounding five service members before being detained.
The shooting took place around 10:56 a.m. at Fort Stewart, home to the 3rd Infantry Division. According to military officials, the suspect—identified as Sergeant Quornelius Radford, 28—used a privately owned handgun to carry out the attack. He was taken into custody within an hour, thanks to the swift response of nearby soldiers who tackled and restrained him until law enforcement arrived.
All five injured soldiers were rushed to medical facilities for treatment. As of Tuesday evening, officials confirmed all victims were in stable condition, with some requiring surgery and others transferred to a trauma center in Savannah for additional care.
The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation. Authorities have not yet disclosed any details about what may have led to the violence, but they confirmed the weapon was not military-issued. The FBI is assisting Army investigators in the case.
Military officials and Georgia Governor Brian Kemp both issued statements expressing concern for those affected and gratitude to those who responded quickly to contain the situation. The White House and the Department of Defense have also been briefed.
Fort Stewart is one of the largest Army installations in the U.S., and incidents like this are rare. Still, the event has prompted renewed scrutiny of base security and soldier mental health.
