Pritzker Criticizes Abbott and Trump Over Texas Redistricting Effort

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker sharply rebuked Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and President Donald Trump over their push to redraw congressional maps in Texas before the next census, calling it a blatant attempt to secure more Republican seats. Speaking on Meet the Press, Pritzker labeled Abbott a “joke” and Trump a “cheater,” accusing both of trying to undermine the democratic process. He contrasted Texas’ approach with Illinois’ redistricting process, which he said was conducted with public input and transparency. Despite Trump receiving 44% of Illinois’ vote in 2024, Republicans currently hold only three of the state’s 17 House seats.

The dispute in Texas escalated after more than 50 Democratic lawmakers left the state in protest, preventing the GOP-led Legislature from moving forward with its redistricting plan. Abbott has responded by repeatedly calling special legislative sessions and threatening to have the lawmakers arrested. However, Pritzker dismissed the idea that Illinois would cooperate with any effort to detain the Democrats, calling such actions unconstitutional and politically motivated.

Democrats in Texas argue that the GOP’s plan is designed to dilute the influence of diverse urban and suburban communities, effectively locking in Republican dominance for years. Abbott and his allies insist the changes are needed to reflect population shifts and maintain “fair” representation. The fight underscores a broader national battle over partisan gerrymandering, with both parties accusing the other of exploiting the process for political gain. Pritzker warned that allowing mid-decade redistricting for partisan advantage could set a dangerous precedent, eroding public trust in elections and further polarizing the nation’s politics.
