A potential home run by Xander Bogaerts was wiped off the board Monday night after umpires ruled fan interference, leading to the early ejection of San Diego Padres manager Mike Shildt during their game against the San Francisco Giants.
In the second inning, Bogaerts sent a deep drive to left where Giants outfielder Heliot Ramos leapt at the wall. As the ball neared his glove, fans reached over the railing, and the ball deflected into the stands. The initial call signaled a home run, but a video review overturned the play, declaring Bogaerts out due to interference. Shildt argued the ruling at length before being tossed from the game.
Ramos later said he believed a fan’s arm — and even its shadow — obstructed his view as he tried to secure the catch. Giants manager Bob Melvin agreed with the final decision, noting that even small disruptions can affect a fielder’s ability to complete a play.
The reversal proved costly for San Diego, erasing an early scoring chance. The Giants capitalized on their momentum, hitting three first-inning home runs and holding on for a 4–3 victory over the Padres.
