Belichick’s College Coaching Debut Ends in Lopsided Loss for UNC

Bill Belichick’s return to football as the head coach at the University of North Carolina was met with a sobering result. In Monday night’s season opener, UNC was defeated 48–14 by TCU, with the Tar Heels giving up more points than any team Belichick had ever allowed in his NFL career.

The game began with promise—an 83-yard touchdown drive energized a sellout crowd at Kenan Stadium, highlighted by a pregame concert and appearances from notable alumni like Michael Jordan and Mia Hamm. But momentum swiftly shifted. TCU turned the tide with two defensive touchdowns and an explosive second half that included a 75-yard run, ultimately asserting control and leaving UNC trailing by 34 points at halftime.

Belichick, known for his measured style, acknowledged the disparity: “They out‑played us, out‑coached us, and they were just better than we were tonight,” he said. He also noted, “We’re better than what we were tonight … nobody’s going to do it for us. We’re going to have to do it ourselves.” Meanwhile, backup quarterback Max Johnson, who stepped in after starter Gio Lopez left with a back injury, echoed the theme of execution over design. “We prepared for a week and a half for TCU … we need to do a better job executing,” Johnson said.
