Los Angeles Chargers running back Najee Harris was carted off the field in their 23–20 win over the Denver Broncos after suffering a non-contact injury, preliminarily diagnosed as an Achilles issue, coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed. The injury occurred just before halftime during a play-action, when Harris collapsed and clutched his left calf. He was initially ruled questionable due to an ankle problem before the more concerning injury was revealed.
Before exiting, Harris had rushed for 28 yards on six carries. With him unavailable, rookie Omarion Hampton stepped in and made a career-high effort, posting 129 yards from scrimmage and scoring his first NFL touchdown. Hampton’s strong outing, along with limited snaps for the backups, suggests he could take on a larger role if Harris is sidelined for any extended time.
Harbaugh said Harris will undergo further testing to assess the severity of the injury but noted the veteran’s demeanor was “cold-blooded” (i.e. composed) despite the setback. Harris, who joined the Chargers in free agency this past offseason, had shown increasing involvement in the offense each week. His durability — he’s never missed a game in his NFL career until now — was considered a key asset for his new team.
