A tragedy unfolded Sunday evening in a small Michigan town when a gunman opened fire inside a Mormon church and then set the building ablaze. Authorities confirmed that at least four people were killed and eight others were wounded in the attack, some of whom remain in critical condition.
The shooter was identified as Thomas Sanford from the neighboring town of Burton. He drove his truck into the side of the building, using gas to ignite a fire. He then got out of his truck and began shooting. The shooter had two American flags flying from the truck bed. Sanford killed at least 4 people and wounded 8 others before being fatally shot by police that showed up on the scene.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene after neighbors reported hearing gunfire and seeing flames. By the time crews arrived, the church was engulfed, making rescue efforts even more difficult. Law enforcement later tracked down the suspect and killed him, bringing an end to the immediate threat. Officials have not yet identified a motive, though investigators are continuing to interview witnesses and collect evidence.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued a statement expressing heartbreak and solidarity with the victims and their families. Local and state leaders also condemned the violence, calling it a devastating assault on a place of worship. Authorities say their priority now is supporting the survivors, comforting the grieving community, and piecing together how the shooting and fire unfolded.
