Lions’ Brian Branch Punches Chiefs’ JuJu Smith-Schuster, Sparks Postgame Brawl

After the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Detroit Lions 30–17, a heated altercation broke out when Lions safety Brian Branch struck Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster in the face, sparking a postgame scrum.

The incident began when Branch ignored a handshake attempt from Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and then landed an open-handed blow to Smith-Schuster’s facemask, knocking him to the ground. Smith-Schuster tried to retaliate, leading to a scuffle involving players from both teams before coaches and personnel intervened.

Branch later apologized, calling his behavior “childish” and saying he was frustrated by what he viewed as uncalled infractions earlier in the game. He specifically cited a play in which he believed Smith-Schuster illegally blocked him in the back without penalty.

Detroit’s head coach Dan Campbell condemned the action as unacceptable and apologized to the Chiefs and Smith-Schuster, emphasizing it did not reflect the team’s values. Chiefs coach Andy Reid called the hit “unprovoked,” noting that Smith-Schuster sustained a bloody nose.

Branch, a second-year player who has already been fined multiple times this season for unsportsmanlike conduct, faces further disciplinary action from the NFL.
