A day after suffering a fractured left (non-throwing) hand during Sunday’s win over the Las Vegas Raiders, Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert underwent successful surgery Monday in Los Angeles. The team announced he is considered “day-to-day,” and his availability for next week’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles will be evaluated later this week.
Herbert sustained the injury on a scramble in the first quarter when a Raiders defender’s helmet collided with his left hand. Despite the pain, he stayed in the game — cushioned by a cast and glove — and helped lead his team to victory. He completed 15 of 20 passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns before leaving briefly for medical treatment.
Though Herbert and the Chargers remain hopeful he’ll be ready for Monday night’s game, the team is preparing for alternatives. Backup quarterback Trey Lance is expected to take key first-team reps this week, especially in goal-line and under-center situations, to help ease any potential burden on Herbert’s injured hand.
