Kutter Crawford Out for Season After Off-Field Wrist Injury, Red Sox Confirm

The Boston Red Sox announced Wednesday that starting pitcher Kutter Crawford will miss the remainder of the 2025 season due to a wrist injury sustained off the field. Manager Alex Cora confirmed that the 29-year-old right-hander underwent surgery on his throwing wrist following what he described as an “unfortunate accident” unrelated to baseball activities.

Cora emphasized that the incident did not involve any reckless behavior and that Crawford simply found himself in a tough situation. Details about the exact nature of the injury remain private, but the Red Sox made it clear that Crawford will not return this season. “It’s a tough break,” Cora said. “He wasn’t doing anything wrong—it was just an accident.”

Crawford was already on the mend from a right knee injury that had sidelined him late in the 2024 campaign. Though initially expected to return during spring training, lingering recovery issues kept him on the 60-day injured list. Now, with wrist surgery added to his setbacks, Crawford’s 2025 season has officially come to an end.

Last season, Crawford was a steady presence in Boston’s rotation, making a team-high 33 starts and throwing nearly 184 innings. Despite giving up the most home runs in the league, he remained one of the Red Sox’s most relied-upon arms during a year of transition. His absence will now force the team to dig deeper into their pitching reserves.

As it stands, the Red Sox rotation features Garrett Crochet, Walker Buehler, Brayan Bello, Lucas Giolito, and Richard Fitts. However, injuries and inconsistency have tested the team’s depth early in the season. With Crawford now officially out, Boston may need to consider trade options or promote from within to stabilize the rotation as the summer progresses.
