Blue Jays Knock Out Yankees, Reach ALCS for the First Time Since 2016

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. stood on the field at Yankee Stadium, glanced up at the sky, and quietly broke into tears. His Toronto Blue Jays had just eliminated the Yankees with a 5–2 win in Game 4 of the ALDS, punching their ticket to the American League Championship Series for the first time since 2016.

Toronto’s pitching staff—using eight arms, none lasting more than five outs—successfully stifled a Yankees lineup that had led all of baseball in runs scored this season. A balanced offensive attack spread the scoring: Guerrero batted .529 with three homers in the series, and utility player Ernie Clement hit .643. After a key two-out RBI single in the seventh that extended a narrow lead, Toronto added another run in the eighth and closed the door with a clutch save from Jeff Hoffman.

Yankees head coach Aaron Boone conceded simply: “They beat us this series, simple as that.” Meanwhile, the Blue Jays now await their ALCS opponent, and plan to start Kevin Gausman at home in Toronto.
