Former NFL All-Pro running back Doug Martin has died at the age of 36, authorities and his family confirmed. He passed away Saturday after being taken into police custody following an incident in Oakland, California, involving a reported break-in.
According to the Oakland Police Department (OPD), officers responded early, found Martin involved in a residential break-in and attempted to detain him. A brief struggle occurred and Martin became unresponsive while in custody. He was transported to a hospital where he later died.
Martin’s family revealed that he had been privately battling serious mental-health challenges. They said his parents had sought medical assistance and support from local authorities prior to the incident. Feeling disoriented, Martin reportedly left his home and entered a neighboring residence, where the police encounter took place. “Ultimately, mental illness proved to be the one opponent from which Doug could not run,” the statement read.
On the field, Martin made a substantial impact. A first-round pick (No. 31) in the 2012 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he rushed for 1,454 yards and 11 touchdowns in his rookie season and was selected to the Pro Bowl. In 2015 he earned First-Team All-Pro honors after rushing for 1,402 yards and six touchdowns. Over his seven-season career (six with Tampa Bay, one with the Oakland Raiders), he compiled more than 5,300 rushing yards and 30 touchdowns.
The Buccaneers honored his legacy in a statement, calling him a “fan favorite” who made a lasting impact on the franchise and noting he was recognized among the team’s top 50 players of all time.
Investigations into the circumstances of his death are underway. The OPD’s homicide division, internal affairs, the civilian-led Oakland police commission, the Community Police Review Agency and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office are all involved in reviewing the case. The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave.
The family has requested privacy at this time and expressed gratitude for the support they have received.
Martin’s death is a sad outcome for a vibrant talent whose career highlighted exceptional athletic achievement, and whose struggle off the field reminds us of the hidden battles many face behind the spotlight.
