Edgecombe’s Historic Debut Fuels Sixers’ Comeback Win

Philadelphia rookie V.J. Edgecombe delivered one of the most explosive debuts in NBA history, pouring in 34 points on 13-for-26 shooting in a 117-116 victory over the Boston Celtics. His scoring mark is the most in a debut by any player since Wilt Chamberlain opened his career with 43 points in 1959, and it also broke the 76ers’ franchise debut record previously held by Allen Iverson (30 in 1996).

Edgecombe announced himself early with 14 first-quarter points, the most by any Sixers rookie in an NBA debut. He played with poise well beyond his years, adding seven rebounds, three assists and a steal while attacking Boston’s defense from all three levels. His shot creation and confidence gave Philadelphia a scoring engine when the game started to wobble.

His biggest impact, though, came late. With the Sixers down 13 in the fourth quarter, Edgecombe keyed the comeback with a series of drives and mid-range jumpers that steadied the offense and flipped momentum. By the final buzzer, he had not only authored a win but instantly stamped himself as a name to watch in a franchise used to its rookies rewriting history.
