Late on the evening of Saturday, October 25, during homecoming festivities at the university’s campus in Lower Oxford Township, gunfire erupted outside the school’s International Cultural Center (ICC). The event was a post-football game tailgate and yard fest attended by students, alumni and guests.
The shooting resulted in one fatality and six injured individuals. The victim who died was identified as 25-year-old Jujuan Jeffers of Wilmington, Delaware, who was struck in the head and died shortly after midnight. The six wounded, all aged between 20 and 25, include one current student, one alumnus, and four others with no direct connection to the university. All of the injured are expected to survive.
Authorities believe there may have been multiple shooters involved, though they emphasized that the incident does not appear to have been a pre-planned mass casualty attack aimed at the campus. One individual, 21-year-old Zecqueous Morgan-Thompson of Wilmington, Delaware, was arrested and charged with carrying a concealed firearm without a license; it remains unclear whether the weapon he possessed was directly used in the gunfire.
In response to the tragedy, Lincoln University cancelled classes for the following Monday to allow for a day of healing and reflection and made counseling services available for students and staff. State authorities, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the state police, joined the local investigation, are collecting video evidence and asking the public for any footage from the scene.
